Abstract

University of Liverpool, The Centre for Culture & Everyday Life Presents

Small Anthropology, Black Everyday Lives, Material Culture and Narrative: An Overview

Shawn-Naphtali Sobers

3pm, Monday 12th December 2022, SoTA library, 19-23 Abercromby Square

In this talk Professor Sobers discusses his recent research, which explores Black everyday lives, material culture and narrative, in the context of domestic space. Sobers discusses certain objects in the family home, drawing upon personal experience, and uses them as a portal through which to examine the intricacies and nuances of daily considerations of African heritage people living in Britain in the modern era, (post 1950). The research demonstrates how the personal sphere directly links to wider public and political concerns, using 'small anthropology' methodology' and narrative as the device for this cultural exploration.
