The feminist intellectual: weariness, critique and the affective turn

Abstract

This chapter considers the current position of the feminist intellectual,academic and pedagogue in relation to a ‘critical theory’ that has been characterized as ossifying into a hegemonic doxy. It explores opportunities
offered by the affective turn in theory (within which feminist intellectuals have led the way) in overcoming a perceived ‘weariness’ with ideological and textual critique. However, pointing out the risks of what might be lost, or ‘turned from’, it argues for the maintenance of the discourses of critique, in both academic work and pedagogy, ‘beside’ (to borrow a concept from
Kosofsky Sedgwick) the new understandings offered by the affective turn.
