A comparison of online pedagogic guidelines: Cambridge vs Harvard

Abstract

The paper offers a direct comparison of the latest online pedagogic guidelines from the University of Cambridge and Harvard University. As such, it compares Harvard's Best Practice: Online Pedagogy with the relevant guidelines from Cambridge's Centre for Teaching and Learning. Whereas there are similarities between the two sets of guidelines, there would also seem to be certain subtle but significant differences. Harvard's guidelines would be otherwise introduced by so-called guiding principles, whereas Cambridge's guidelines commence with an admission, the relevant admission being that teaching online is not simply a matter of 'converting' face-to-face teaching. The paper concludes by presenting the main differences, similarities and advantages of the two models.
