The rule of law in the modern European context: A critical note
Platsas, Antonios Emmanuel

Abstract
The Rule of Law as a concept in contemporary Europe is not one which has the exact same connotations as the connotations which the concept used to have decades ago. It grew to become a significantly wider concept than traditionally perceived. Its value remained as central as ever in that the Rule of Law as a principle operates at the very heart of European law. Yet, whilst the centrality of the Rule of Law remained the same, its remit has expanded. Nowadays, the main line of qualitative enquiry, one observes, is not whether the core of the Rule of Law is upheld. Rather one considers to engage with the question as to whether the periphery of the Rule of Law is one which is upheld in Europe, because there is a core and a periphery to the Rule of Law. This critical note, therefore, aims to initiate a discussion in this particular area of enquiry.
