Photography and the representation of Black lives

Abstract

This half-day workshop explored the role of photography in the representation and exploration of Black cultural ideas, from history to the present day.

Led by Professor Shawn-Naphtali Sobers, the session included a lecture in three parts, looking at historic and contemporary examples of the representation of African heritage people, moving from how colonial Europeans depicted Africans, through to how Africans started to visually represent themselves. The session also included three practical photography tasks, and supported participants in using the lens effectively to capture their experiences and communicating conceptual ideas.
