Abstract
Middlebrow drama has long been dismissed as unrealistic and unchallenging. Ultimately, this led to the rejection by critics (though interestingly not by audiences) of the middlebrow for confrontational and experimental drama in the post-war period. This paper will provide a different perspective by focusing on how the Second World War affected the writing, production and the reception of middlebrow drama to show that, like the cinema, it played a part in the war effort of the time.
