Abstract
PDEV is the practical implementation of the Theory of Norms and Exploitations. It is intended as a basic resource for use by language learners, language teachers, translators, and computational linguists. The aim is to identify the patterns of normal usage in which each English verb participates. This pilot study, freely available at http://nlp.fi.muni.cz/projects/cpa, presents the patterns for 700 verbs. The methodology involves corpus-driven analysis of valencies and collocations. This in turn sheds light on paradigmatic lexical sets of nouns and noun phrases, and hence on the fundamental semantic organization of all languages.
