Characterising behaviours: Linking theory, behaviour and intervention design using the‘4 dimensions of behaviour’ (4DB) framework

Abstract

There are few ways to distinguish between different ‘types’ of behaviour, and therefore which of these theories may best be applied to understanding any particular one, or which interventions may be best suited to promoting change. For example, how might strategies to encourage smokers to quit their habit differ from getting people to install loft insulation? On the basis of extensive field experience in the areas of energy use, transport, environment and public health, we have developed a framework for ‘characterising’ behaviours to give practitioners:
1.A clearer understanding of the key characteristics of a behaviour;
2.A means of identifying the most relevant theories or models of behaviour;
3.A systematic approach for designing effective behaviour change interventions.
