Abstract

Working in collaboration with composer Dan Jones, Jerram created a series of light and sound based installations in an abandoned tunnel beneath Birmingham. One of several underground concrete spaces under the city, the tunnel is over 400m in length and connects New Street Station with the old GPO sorting office and acts as a message conduit for the whole of Birmingham.

Commissioned by Fierce TV, the project develops Jerram's NESTA funded research into the haunted spatiality of post-industrial spaces first trialled in the project 'Tunnel Vision' which was staged in Bristol as part of the Brunel200 commissioning programme. As at Birmingham, it was installed in a half-kilometre long railway tunnel in which light-generated 'trains' appeared to move along the length of the disused railway track passing through any visitors present. Over 4,400 visitors took part in the seven-day event in Bristol.
