Abstract

Some of the ways that absence has been expressed through artists’ books - the loss of biodiversity, memory, relationships and culture. Examples include works by Roelof Bakker, Caren Florance, Ben Jenner, Gracia & Louise, Essence Press, Sophie Loss, Elisabeth Tonnard, and selected works from the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here project An Inventory. Some ways in which lost or forgotten techniques, processes and materials have been rejuvenated by artists and bookmakers, for example Kitty Maryatt (pochoir), psw (Gestetner mimeographs and dry transfer letters), Daniel Lehan (typewriters).
