Abstract

In recent years a growing number of scholars, conversant in both ancient and continental philosophy, have begun to caution us against clinging to those canonical interpretations of the Platonic dialogues which have been put forward over the last century and, even more stridently, against accepting any of the critical interpretations of Plato’s dialogues which have been offered by the usual
suspects of continental philosophy. Instead, we have been urged to take each dialogue, each interlocutor and each dramatic context into consideration before coming to any philosophical conclusions whatsoever; conclusions, we are told, which are at best minimal and open to reinterpretation.
