Emeritus Professor of City Leadership Robin Hambleton Robin.Hambleton@uwe.ac.uk
This article suggests that, if the UK central government wants to bring about strong economic growth, whilst also levelling up the country, it should draw lessons from countries that have already done this. The example set out is Sweden. This country outperforms the UK on range of societal indicators, including productivity, level of equality, and environmental indicators. The article explains how the very strong system of local government in Sweden underpins many of these achievements.
