Abstract
This small scale project seeks to implement a voluntary pilot mentoring scheme for a group of ITE trainees new to both Exeter and the Graduate School of Education and registered for study during 2020/21. Through this mentorship programme, we hope to provide a nurturing and safe space for ITE trainees to talk about issues of training, assessment, curriculum, social experiences, and career guidance that are experienced at various intersections. We hope this ‘space’ helps the trainees to critically reflect as future teachers and to become more equipped in navigating predominantly white spaces. Mentoring is based on exchanging experiences, ideas and feedback between the two parties. It helps to promote understanding of formal and informal structures, enhances opportunities for staff to develop and build knowledge, and enable continuing professional development and personal growth. This project would include developing a professional mentoring framework, where ITE students will be invited to participate in a year-long project. This would include 5 sessions spread out over the course of one year that cover orientation, curriculum & assessment, social experiences, training, and career guidance.
