Enterprise imaging: The visualisation of resource base

Abstract

Purpose – To present a methodology for the visual representation of resources within a multi-organisational enterprise. The visualisation shows resource dependency and co-ordinators utilised by an alliance relationship to deliver an outcome.
Design/methodology/approach – Research was undertaken through cooperative inquiry using a multiple case study approach. The unit of analysis is a multi-organisational alliance, focussed upon the main client and provider. The enterprise image captures the resources required to deliver a complex service. The primary case focussed upon a complex outcome based equipment service contract from the aerospace sector. Subsequent cases are presented from Healthcare and Tourism to demonstrate the transferability of construct. To strengthen methodological development post case methodology reviews were carried out with case partners.
Findings – Attempts to apply known mapping techniques to deliver a visual image of the resources required to deliver a multi-organisational service enterprise proved unfruitful due to the number of stakeholders and non-linear process flows. The work details an approach to produce a holistic visual representation of the resources of a multi-organisational service enterprise. The resultant output is an Enterprise Image which illustrates the bounded resources which are co-ordinated to deliver a complex service. The image is centred upon partnered dependency in a shared front office where value is co-created and builds out across the back office functions where resources support the value creation process. Production of a visual image of the resources raised many questions for both academics and practitioners, including but not limited to: extensive interdependence; tensions in back offices; impact of change; enterprise structures. Application in multiple case studies demonstrated transferability and post case review provided evidence of reliability and utility.
Originality/value – A developmental imaging technique that provides a visualisation of the resources in an alliance. This has been used in complex multi-organisational organisations, providing a basis for discussion of opportunities for improvement activity, further integration and resource combinations. The tool may have benefits in strategic alliance contracting.
