Abstract

The talk addressed the role of the alternative space in Bristol, and how various art groups operate. The idea of the art collective has become associated with activities that engage with avant garde ideas, that rebel against the gallery system and promote popular culture as an alternative to art in museums. This talk debunked some myths about marginalisation. The argument relocated ideas about the way art groups currently engage in their own networks and economies, and how this challenges and even threatens established art institutions.
