Healthy architectural ecology: Designing and constructing healthier built environments
Rice, Louis
Authors
Abstract
The built environment is the location where the majority of the world’s population resides. Urban residents spend over 90% of their time indoors. Yet the design of the built environment is also linked to unhealthy lifestyles. How we design cities and buildings plays a significant part in determining whether the inhabitants will be unhealthy. This research examines the links between the design of architectural and urban environments and how they might improve human wellbeing. The research adopts an holistic approach to critically examine these relationships. The research uses new digital technologies combined with participatory design research methodologies to gather data on wellbeing and human health. The work innovatively and creatively examines new designscapes for healthy living.
