Abstract
Under the banner of ‘Just Transition’, the labour movement has articulated the necessity to transform workplace production practices and to tackle social and environmental problems in tandem (e.g. labor4sustainability 2017). Yet, in order to most effectively, efficiently and equitably transform our societies towards sustainability, efforts will also need to be made to mobilise the working-class beyond the workplace. This chapter considers how trade unions can extend their sustainability thinking and efforts to those not currently engaged with labour unionism. This would mean reaching out to those not yet accessing information or opportunities in relation to Just Transition due to their economic or social situation, such as carers; unemployed, disabled and retired people; and those who work in non-unionised and casualised employment sectors.
