Abstract

The root concern of American institutionalism is, arguably, the social waste of business enterprise. (Rutherford 2015; Gruchy 1976) In this tradition, the most comprehensive account and theory of social costs is “The Social Costs of Business Enterprise” (Kapp 1963; second enlarged edition of Kapp 1950). Nevertheless, this theory of social costs is but one essential building block of the “Foundations of Institutional Economics”. (Kapp 2011) The latter aims at the social control of business enterprise to end the profit-driven socialization of costs and secure social provisioning for human needs.
