Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by two wood-rotting basidiomycete fungi, Serpula lacrymans (dry rot fungus) and Coniophora puteana (cellar fungus), and the timber of Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine), were identified. Several volatile collectio... A prototype sensor system for the early detection of microbially linked spoilage in stored wheat grain (2003)
Journal Article
de Lacy Costello, B., Ewen, R., Gunson, H., Ratcliffe, N. M., Sivanand, P., & Spencer-Phillips, P. T. (2003). A prototype sensor system for the early detection of microbially linked spoilage in stored wheat grain. Measurement Science and Technology, 14(4), 397-409. https://doi.org/10.1088/0957-0233/14/4/301

Spencer-Phillips was Co-Investigator, the lead biologist in this HGCA-funded multi-disciplinary work, and co-wrote the paper. The grant was based on his expertise in the microbiology of post-harvest spoilage.

Topology: A novel method to describe branching patterns in Peronospora viciae colonies (2003)
Journal Article
Johnston, M. A., Ott, A., Spencer-Phillips, P. T., & Willey, N. (2003). Topology: A novel method to describe branching patterns in Peronospora viciae colonies. Mycological Research, 107(10), 1123-1131. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0953756203008384

Topology provides a novel means to describe branching patterns and has not been applied to fungal colonies previously. For any branched structure, various topologies are possible, and these lie between two extremes, a herringbone pattern (main axis w...
