Abstract

Holy Hiatus featured a series of temporary public art projects and events curated by Ruth Jones and took place in Cardigan between 21st and 31st May 2008. The project focused on social ritual and identity, community and public places. Holy Hiatus refers to the crossing of the threshold between outer and inner consciousness and the artworks and events explored the vital role that ritual plays in social interaction, stressing the importance of 'liminal' or in-between spaces and experiences, where personal and social identities may be creatively transformed.

Yvonne Buchheim’s event transformed the public swimming pool into a theatrical stage unfolding a playful choreographed interaction between two swimmers and two singers. The sound-score, composed and performed by Maggie Nicols in response to the swim style and movement of swimmers created an unusual dialogue with one ‘swimming the melody’ and the other ‘swimming the drone’. The resulting film was nominated and reviewed by Rob Lowe on Axis.

The artwork was commissioned by Holy Hiatus and accompanied by a symposium at the Small World Theatre in Cardigan.
