Abstract

This is the first partial translation of F.W.J. Schelling’s On the World Soul (1798) into English, and is accompanied by my Introduction to that work. The translation draws on the recent edition of the work produced in the Historisch-kritische Ausgabe of Schelling’s works, with its wealth of detailed scholarship, and provides pagination both for that edition and the standard reference edition of Schelling’s works, ed. K.F.A. Schelling (1856-61). The Introduction argues that, it’s title notwithstanding, the work is a treatise on the place of biology in the natural sciences, and develops many of the themes found in Kant’s philosophy as much as in contemporary biology. The Introduction also serves to bring the considerable volume of recent German scholarship in the history and philosophy of the natural sciences, to the attention of English-speaking readerships in the history and philosophy of the sciences, as well as in Idealist Philosophy of Nature.
