Abstract
There seems little doubt that hydrogen gas (molecular hydrogen: H2) has significant effects on biological systems, including on plants. H2 can be administered as a gas, but more commonly is applied to plants as a solution which has been bubbled with hydrogen gas, what is referred to as hydrogen-rich water (HRW). Applying this to soils or plant tissues, a range of effects have been reported, on seed germination, root growth and post-harvest longevity. Often the effects of H2 are seen following a stress challenge to the plant material, such as exposure to heavy metals, and therefore it has been suggested that H2 might mitigate several plant stresses. What is less clear is how H2 works, as the direct targets of H2 are not obvious. It has been mooted as an antioxidant, interacting with heme oxygenase or altering the redox state of proteins. Clearly more work is needed to fully understand how H2 interacts with biological materials. Here, this Special Issue has brought together several papers by those working on this exciting and promising area of plant science.
