Beuysian Legacies in Ireland and Beyond

Abstract

This collection of trans-disciplinary essays addresses artistic, cultural and political legacies of Joseph Beuys’ concept of art and its societal application, especially the artist’s concern with engendering an active relationship between art and society, for example through the Free International University (FIU). Since the 1980s, Beuys’ practice has had a strong influence both on “relational aesthetics” and the “art and reconciliation” movement, which has attempted to bring about cultural understanding and, where possible, reconciliation in situations of ethnic conflict (for example in Northern Ireland and Palestine). His work constitutes, one might argue, a form of applied anthropology.
