Abstract

Due to its rich biodiversity, Bioko Island is a key site for conservation in Africa. The high incidence of illegal hunting and regular occurrence of the bushmeat trade, however, poses a serious threat to the fauna of Bioko, particularly primates. This year (2013) the Government of Equatorial Guinea, particularly the province of Bioko Sur, has taken active steps to enforce the law that regulates hunting in an attempt to protect the country’s wildlife. These include: (1) the arrest in March/April 2013 of members of the military that were hunting illegally along the Ureka road; (2) the recent arrest of one of several poachers in Luba and the immediate burning of their bushmeat; and (3) the erection of INDEFOR “No hunting” signs on roads that enter the two protected areas of Bioko. In the following report, three recommendations are provided, including ensuring that government officials are well informed regarding the laws that regulate hunting in Bioko.
