Abstract

Family contributes to immigrant entrepreneurs’ business development in different ways. Family provides financial resources, accept lower salaries and offer volunteer based work. However, there is a lack of research investigating the role of family in the oppoertunity creation process.Thereby the aim of this paper is to explore how family influences the process of entrepreneurial opportunity created by immigrant entrepreneurs. To fulfill this purpose, we rely on the perspective of opportunity creation process and family embeddedness. The paper identifies the different sources of social capital and discusses how these sources play a role during the opportunity creation process. We use data collected from four cases of immigrant entrepreneurs, who established businesses in Sweden and have origin from emerging countries: Cameroon, Mexico, Lebanon and Syria. We show that the sources of social capital serves to either transmit values and create practice in the opportunity creation process.
