Emerson's "Apposite Metaphors" and the grounds of creativity

Abstract

This article offers an original interpretation of Emerson's theory of metaphor as a principle of creation as it appears in his lectures and journal of the 1820s and 1830s, the essay 'Nature' (1836), and as it develops into his theory of symbolism in the essay 'The Poet.'
