Town-gown engagement can be chaotic but universities should be local civic leaders

Abstract

This short article for a professional and practice audience examines the impact of universities on the localities where they are located. Evidence from the author's experience in the USA suggests that British universities could be doing much more to engage in local civic leadership. The article includes specific suggestions for university leaders and scholars to consider.
