Abstract

Since the last war a major feature of the restructuring of space by capital, in Britain as elsewhere, has been the massive scale of commercial and industrial property development. Office development, shopping centres, town-centre redevelopment, warehouse and distribution centres and industrial estates have been the main components. This restructuring of the physical infrastructure reflects major changes in the processes of commodity production, circulation and consumption which it supports. At a general level these changes have included the concentration and centralization of capital (industrial, commercial and interest-bearing) within individual enterprises; the sectoral decline in importance of manufacturing industry and within this sector the increasing importance of light manufacturing industry; the growth of wholesale and retail activity; and finally the massive expansion of the office-based service sector.
