Abstract

The economic crisis and severe austerity measures that have deluged Greece over the last eight years have had a significant impact on the people’s mental health and mental health services (Economou et. al., 2013; Triliva, Fragkiadaki & Balamoutsou, 2013). Child poverty is a significant factor as a direct result of economic crisis in Greece which makes children and their families vulnerable. According to Eurostat (2013, 2016), 30.4% of children under 18 in Greece are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. A growing number of children deprived of basic material goods have climbed from 10% in 2008 to 26% in 2014. From 2006 to 2016 Greek adolescents tend to have significant lower life satisfaction as the economic crisis in the country put significant stress on families and affected negatively children and youth (Kokkevi et al., 2014). In addition, the economic restrictions on families resulted in 27.9% of adolescents reporting that their families stopped going on vacation, 27.3% saying that the number of fights among family members increased, and 21.35% reported that one of their parents lost their work due to economic crisis.
This chapter focuses on the exploration of the psychological well-being of children living in Crete (part of Greece) within the context of the Promoting Psychological Wellbeing Globally (PPWG) project (Nastasi & Borja, 2016) in an effort to build a culturally – sensitive intervention model (Nastasi et al. 2014). The authors built their ecological model on the use of a clinical social work intervention (Ecomaps) as a research tool which provides information on the well-being of the children in various cultural contexts (Nastasi & Borja, 2016).
