Abstract

This presentation introduced preceding festival research which led to the creation of the project ‘Unkindest Cut’. International research from the Science Live project indicated that science festival and event organisers considered their work to be a standalone distinct area of science communication practice. They wished to develop their professional reflective practice skills, as well as learn about evaluation and peer review of science communication research. The Unkindest Cut project thus presented a perfect capsule opportunity to develop the collaborating partners’ professional practice, by pairing up related science festivals through exchange visits to learn from each other in the course of hosting a festival installation with a community engagement element. This talk will discuss learnings from this process, and evaluate how we can develop science communication practice for the future.
