Abstract

Purpose: This case report formed part of a larger study undertaken to establish whether certain types of knee pathology can be assessed using diagnostic ultrasound. Methods: A patient with a persistently painful knee joint was scanned using sonography. Images were obtained of the superficial structures of the knee. Results: The examination revealed a defect of the medial meniscus, which was diagnosed as a tear of the medial meniscus with an associated cyst. This diagnosis was confirmed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), long considered the gold standard when imaging the knee joint. Conclusion: High-resolution ultrasound does have a role in the assessment of superficial structures of the knee and, with an experienced operator, could replace the use of MRI in confirming or excluding the presence of pathology in these structures. © 2001 The College of Radiographers.
