Abstract

The construction industry has a poor reputation for being a high-risk industry due to its poor record of occupational injuries, illnesses, and deaths globally. In recent times, the Internet of Things (IoT) as part of a suite of Industry 4.0 technologies has emerged as a potential effective technological approach for tackling poor construction occupational safety and health (OSH) performance. To gain a comprehensive view of the role of IoT in tackling the OSH challenges in construction, a systematic review of the existing literature was conducted. The review reveals that OSH areas covered by IoT-related studies include risk assessment and control, hazard identification, and visualisation. Furthermore, IoT has been used to tackle falls, struck-by, and manual handling hazards. The various challenges involved in applying IoT technologies for construction OSH management, which include the high energy consumption rate, are also highlighted together with possible future research directions.
