Abstract

This 10,000-word chapter, for which Greenslade is responsible for 75% of the content, is the first essay in the collection edited by Greenslade and Rodgers (Bath Spa University). It seeks to place Allen's polymathic achievement in the context of British literary and cultural history 1880-1900 and to situate the contributions to the collection in relation to these topics. The essays for the collection were chosen (with one exception) from papers delivered at a conference organised by Greenslade and Rogers: 'Grant Allen: Literature and Culture Politics', UWE, 13 November 1999 (the whole volume being peer-reviewed). The conference, which included keynote lectures by Peter Morton (University of Adelaide) and John Lucas (Emeritus Professor, Nottingham Trent University), was the first to be held on Allen.
