Abstract

This is the first major output of the French branch of the Language Learner Project, co-ordinated by Treffers-Daller. Whilst Tidball led the data collection and transcription of the French data and wrote the methodology chapter, Treffers-Daller formulated the research questions, provided the theoretical background, led the coding of the data in CHAT format, the computational analyses in CLAN and the statistical analyses in SPSS. Treffers-Daller also wrote most of the chapter (except the methodology section).
The article is related to Daller's output 2, in that the issue of vocabulary richness is addressed in this chapter as well as in the journal article by Daller et al (2003). This article is the first one to make a detailed analysis of lexical richness in learner data, and it proposes a new measure of lexical richness which the authors developed in the course of the project. As there are very few indepth analyses of French vocabulary richness, this chapter makes an important contribution to our understanding of French learner language.
