Abstract

Thatcherite polices impacted upon the theatre, not just in the gradual erosion of subsidization and implementation of the market-driven economy, but also in the subject matter and use of dramatic form. Whilst it was initially suggested that many of the playwrights of the 1990s - especially the in-yer-face dramatists - were essentially apolitical, a fresh look at Judy Upton's work shows her marked concern with the effects of Conservative rule, and her plays can be seen to provide a coruscating denunciation of the political strategies of the 1980s and 90s.
